How to Play and the Rules of Deals Rummy

There are generally between 2 and 6 players in every game of Deals rummy. What sets this format apart from other variants is that at the very beginning of the game, all players are allocated a set number of chips. At the end of every deal, the player who wins (the first player to make a valid declaration) will get their opponents’ chips as well. The option to drop from games is not available to players if they are playing a 2-player 1-deal variant of the game.

How to Score is Calculated in Deals Rummy

In Deals rummy, the winner of the game is the player with the most chips at the end of all deals. After each deal, the deal winner gets chips equal to the sum total of the points of the losing players. Points are calculated for ungrouped cards, valid groups are equal to 0 points.

The values of the cards are as follows:

Face cards (king, queen, and jack): 10 points each
Numbered cards (2 to 10): Same as their face value
Jokers (both printed and wild): 0 points each
Ace cards: 10 points

For instance, if you have the following hand at the end of a deal:

7♥ 8♥ 9♥ 10♥ (pure sequence)

A♠ K♠ Joker (impure sequence)

3♥ 3♠ 3♦ (set)

5♣ 9♣ J♥ (ungrouped cards)

Here, we have three ungrouped cards- 5♣ 9♣ J♥

The valid groups would be equal to 0 points each, while the ungrouped cards would be equal to 5 + 9 + 10 = 24 points.

The points from all the players would be added to the winner’s total at the end of each deal. At the end of the game, the player with the highest total would be considered the winner.

How the drop option works in Deals Rummy

The penalty for dropping depends on the platform that one is playing. For RummyTime, the penalty for dropping from a 6-player Deal rummy game stands at:

First drop = 20 points
Middle drop = 40 points
Invalid declaration = 80 points

Please note that there is no option to drop out of a game in a 2-player version of Deal rummy when it comes to RummyTime.

Penalty for Missing 3 Moves

How Chips Are Allocated at the Beginning of the Game

Each player in a Deals game is allocated the same number of chips at the start of the game. It is calculated as: (No. of deals) × (Maximum number of points one can lose)

So, for a 6-player, 3-deals game, each player would start with: 3 × 80 = 240 chips.

How Chips Are Settled at the End of the Game

Here’s how scoring works in a game of Deals rummy.

Let’s imagine a 6-player, 3-deals game, starting with 240 chips per player. Here’s how the players fared after the first deal.

Player A: 0 points (winner)
Player B: 65 points
Player C: 49 points
Player D: 28 points
Player E: 14 points
Player F: 33 points

Now, the winner gets (65 + 49 + 28 + 14 + 33) chips added to their starting amount:

240 + 189 = 429 chips

The other players will have chips equal to their points deducted from their balance:

Player B: 240 - 65 = 175 chips
Player C: 240 - 49 = 191 chips
Player D: 240 - 28 = 212 chips
Player E: 240 - 14 = 226 chips
Player F: 240 - 33 = 207 chips

Similar calculations will happen at the end of the 2nd and 3rd deals as well, and the player with the most chips at the end of all the 3 deals will be declared the winner.
